With today’s age of GREEN & ECO-RESPONSIBILTY, the new buzzwords in business are changing us for the better! We are very excited to take our industry in a new direction with exceptional standards of environmental accountability.
The beauty industry poses many challenges to the environment, from sourcing of ingredients to disposal of packaging and products. Through our alignment with les Salons Green Circle, we hope to ameliorate the ecological footprint we are making, and instead, implement simple green changes that will make both our salon, and our industry, more sustainable. We are proud of this new partnership and confident that as fellow stewards of the planet, you will support our initiative to help keep our communities cleaner and more vibrant places to live.
The Green Circle Program also encourages other green initiatives for our business as well. These range from replacing incandescent lighting with energy efficient fluorescent or LED light bulbs, long term investments in solar power, installing energy efficient fans, instant hot water systems or solar thermal heating. All of these initiatives come at a cost and we want to be transparent with all our guests on the accountability of our new fee and why we have decided to implement it.
We believe that by taking these important and incremental steps now, we can pre-empt future fees that may come as a result of an emerging green economy and the ever-increasing cost of energy and environmental regulation. We are excited about being leaders in our community and the industry, and we are delighted that you care for our world as much as we do. Les Salons Green Circle is 100% traceable and fully accountable for how they handle the materials we give them.
We look forward to growing a greener future together!
Did you know that currently all aluminum foils and colour tubes are not being recycled and are sent to landfill?
We were interested to learn that 95% of all aluminum can be recycled over and over again, including the foils and colour tubes that we use here in our salon. From now, in partnership with Les Salons Green Circle, we will take an environmentally responsible stand and ensure that all of our metals are properly recycled. This will help to reduce the need for more landfill space, and decrease the amount of toxins going into our landfill sites.
Did you know hair when placed in garbage bags will mummify, continue to fill our landfill, and give off methane gas?
Through our partnership with les Salons Green Circle, we will now be diverting all of this hair out of landfill and into other more sustainable projects. SCS, in connection with various partners, is looking at ways that hair can play an important role in a number of commercial applications. It’s exciting to know that hair can be used on our oceans to help in oil spill clean-up and recovery projects. In 2010 Green Circle sent over 1000 lbs. of hair to the Gulf of Mexico to help in the clean-up of the BP oil spill.
Did you know that when hair is mixed with a resin and a hardener, it becomes stronger than fiberglass?
Research is being conducted in London England to see if this can be effectively launched and marketed. Both chairs and eyeglass frames have already been created!
Did you know that all excess chemicals including colour, perm solutions and ammonia get rinsed down the sink and ultimately find their way into the water supply?
This is the ugly truth of the industry. Our solution will be to send all excess colour waste to a hazardous waste facility where they will be incinerated with other chemical wastes. The ensuing heat that is created generates new sources of energy! All this while stopping these chemicals from ending up in our community’s water supply or contaminating ground water.
What is the environmental fee of $2.50 for?
GCS developed this as a tool to financially enable salons and spas to finance their pathway to becoming greener. Their services make it achievable; the ECI will help make it affordable and possible for our salon. Our vision is to ensure that everyone has a role in change. To us, that means asking for change and contributing towards it. This helps us complete the circle!
